I activated the Akismet anti-spam plug-in yesterday. Seems to be working. It won’t affect the readers here that much but I won’t have to keep responding to the e-mails announcing the bogus posts.
Every now and then Akismet has flagged a legitimate comment as spam. It’s a good idea to go in and double check them once a week or so. It has caught over 1000 spam comments on my website to date, and has only flagged a good comment as spam twice. I would say that’s a great track record.
The good comments that it flagged as spam we flagged because they had multiple links in the body of the text. That is common for spammers, so I understand why they were flagged. All in all I can’t imagine running a Wordpress site without it installed.
Comments don’t show up until I approve them or they are from someone who has been approved before so no spam had made it onto a display. I turned on Akismet because I got tired of moderating them. It started out with just one or two a week or so ago. It had gotten up to 5 or 6 a day recently.
I have been looking at what it flags a spam so I’ll see how it works over time. Its only flagged 17 so far but that’s plenty for just a couple of days and that’s 17 I didn’t have to moderate.

I tend to get in the neighborhood of 4000 to 6000 visits a month now. This month is tracking to break 6000 again. With that much traffic, and with posts people have something to say about, I tend to get a lot of comments on some of my posts. Some never get commented on.
I think you can go read the Akismet docs to see how they look for spam. I don’t know a lot about how they look, because it really isn’t that important to me. All I care is that it works.
I am back from the Men’s Retreat. I had a great time. We were staying in a resort on the lake. We rented some pontoon boats to go out cruising the lake on Friday. It’s too bad Kenny’s boat wasn’t ready. That would have been a lot of fun. I played a lot of chess, and we ate a lot of great food. It was great.
